PT 3: Collapse
Euraysia Duhaime: BA, Veterinary Assistant BAH
“Be honest and be kind.”
Pets are prone to a wide variety of illnesses, and it can be difficult to sort out which symptoms are emergencies. I’ve written a series of short blogs to help you determine when your fur-baby needs immediate medical attention. Today, we’re discussing collapse.
It’s always frightening when a pet collapses, and rightly so! This is an emergency situation. Collapse is characterized by a loss of strength causing your pet to fall or have an inability to rise. Possible causes for collapse include heart disease/failure, vascular disease, hemorrhage (internal or external bleeding), anemia, respiratory disease, neurological disease, musculoskeletal disease, toxicity and some drugs/medications. If your pet suffers a collapse, please call your Vet immediately as this could be life threatening.
